Women's Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision to Roger Williams

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The visiting Roger Williams University women's soccer team posted a 2-0 shutout victory over Bridgewater State University on Wednesday night at Swenson Field.

The Hawks improve to 7-3 on the season, while the Bears fall to 3-4. The win for Roger Williams evens up the all-time series at 9-9-1.

After a tightly contested and scoreless first half, the Hawks capitalized on a pair of mishandled shots over the final 45 minutes to come away with the victory.

Freshman defender Grace Kelly (Milford, N.H.) scored on a direct kick from 25 yards out in the 54th minute as the ball went off the keeper's hands and into the left side of the net.

Sophomore midfielder Ariana Montero (Milford, Conn.) then converted off a crossing pass from freshman midfielder Rachel Oster (Scituate, R.I.) in the 59th minute to make it a 2-0 game. Montero's shot from 16 yards out went off the BSU netminder and trickled over the goal line.

Roger Williams finished with a 13-12 shot advantage for the game including an 8-5 edge in the second half. The Hawks also attempted six of the game's nine corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Morgan McCutcheon (Danbury, Conn.) made five saves between the pipes for the Hawks as she recorded her fifth win of the season and third solo shutout.

Senior netminder Tory Viola-Laughery (Brockton, Mass.) got the start for the Bears and made two saves in 63:20 of action.

BSU sophomore goalkeeper Emma Stanlewicz (West Suffield, Conn.) made her collegiate debut as she came on in relief and made two saves including an impressive diving stop on shot by junior midfielder Cassidy Collins (Wilmington, Mass.) with 13 minutes remaining in the contest.

Junior forward Michelle Belcher (Norton, Mass.) paced Bridgewater State with four shots on the evening. Belcher had the best scoring chance for the Bears in the second half as she rang the crossbar in the 75th minute.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday afternoon. The Bears entertain Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe Fitchburg State University at noon, while the Hawks travel to Endicott College for a four o'clock Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) game with the Gulls.
