Women's Soccer Drops 3-0 Decision to Wheaton

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The visiting Wheaton College women's soccer team posted a 3-0 shutout victory over Bridgewater State University on Thursday night at rainy Swenson Field.

The Lyons improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Bears fall to 0-2. Wheaton holds a 10-1 lead in the all-time series which dates back to 1992.

Freshman midfielder Natalie Coughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.) got the Lyons on the board in the 25th minute as she converted off a corner kick. Coughlin corralled a loose ball in front of the net and chipped a shot into the top right corner of the frame. Senior midfielder Chloe Troy (Wethersfield, Conn.) assisted on the goal.

Sophomore midfielder Gaby Diaz (Lynn, Mass.) staked the visitors to a 2-0 lead in the 54th minute as the Lyons once again scored off a corner kick. Junior forward Julia Markmann (Sonderborg, Denmark) sent the corner attempt inside the six and Diaz, with her back to the net, flicked a shot inside the near post.

Wheaton put the finishing touches on the 3-0 victory with just 30 seconds showing on the scoreboard as the Lyons capitalized on an unguarded net. After the BSU netminder came well out of the 18 to play the ball, sophomore forward Makenzie Paulo (West Springfield, Mass.) drove a shot from 44 yards out that rolled into the empty net.

The Lyons finished with a 14-12 shot advantage for the game as well as a 4-3 edge in corner kick attempts.

Wheaton sophomore goalkeeper Gabby Marcus (Charlotte, N.C.) turned aside nine shots to record her first shutout of the season.

BSU senior netminder Tory Viola-Laughery (Brockton, Mass.) made eight saves between the pipes for the Bears.

The Bears are off until next Tuesday (Sept. 14) when they travel to Salve Regina University to take on the Seahawks at 3:30. The Lyons entertain Middlebury College on Sunday (Sept. 12) afternoon at one.
