NEWA Preseason Poll & Individual Rankings Announced

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) 2021-2022 Preseason Poll and Individual Rankings were released this week.

Under the guidance of head coach and 2021 Bridgewater State Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Frank Cammisa (8th Year), the BSU wrestling team is ranked sixth in the NEWA Tournament Poll and unranked in the NEWA Dual Meet Poll.

Juniors Ryan Higgins (Billerica, Mass.) and Edwin Morales (Philadelphia, Pa.) highlight the BSU grapplers ranked individually. Higgins is #1 in New England at heavyweight while Morales is ranked second in the 184-pound weight class. The All-American Morales qualified for the 2020 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship Tournament that was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Also appearing in the NEWA individual rankings for the Bears are seniors Fox Maxwell (Winchester, Mass.) and Devin Winn (Brockton, Mass.), and junior Wilson Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde). Maxwell is ranked third in the 174-pound weight class, Winn sixth at 157 and Gomes seventh at 125.

BSU senior Caleb Lamarre (Brockton, Mass.) is also ranked eighth in the 149-pound weight class but is unable to compete this season due to injury.

The Bridgewater State wrestling team opens the 2021-2022 season on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock when the Bears host the University of Southern Maine in a dual meet at Kelly Gymnasium.
