Wrestling Competes at NEWA Dual Meet Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Bridgewater State University wrestling team competed on Sunday at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Tournament hosted by Johnson & Wales University.

The Bears (1-5) went 0-3 at the tournament to finish in 14th place. Bridgewater dropped a 48-4 setback to #4 seed Springfield College in the opening round and then fell to fifth-seeded Roger Williams University, 54-0, in the consolation bracket. After a bye, the Bears wrapped up the tournament with a 40-11 loss to #11 seed Rhode Island College in the 13th place match.

BSU junior Edwin Morales (Philadelphia, Pa.) went 2-0 on the day with a 10-2 major decision victory over Springfield's Dillan Palaszewski and a 16-1 technical fall win over RIC's Rogelio Gonzalez. Morales improved to 12-2 on the season with the two wins. The 2020 NCAA Division III First Team All-American is now 41-6 in two seasons with the Bears.

For his performance at the NEWA Dual Meet Tournament, Morales was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Host and #2 seed Johnson & Wales captured the tournament title with a 19-17 win over top-seeded Coast Guard in the championship match.

The BSU wrestling team is back in action on Saturday (Jan. 29) when the Bears head to Roger Williams University for a quad meet.
