Gomes, Maxwell Capture Top Honors as Bears Compete at Scott Viera Open

BRISTOL, R.I. -- Bridgewater State University junior Wilson Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde)  and senior Fox Maxwell (Winchester, Mass.) both captured the individual titles at the non-scoring Scott Viera Open hosted by Roger Williams University on Saturday.

Gomes went 4-0 at the tournament while Maxwell posted a 3-0 mark as they both took home top honors in their respective weight classes.

Gomes entered the day as the second seed in the 125-pound weight class and completed a first round 6-1 decision over Bryan Mendez Membreno of Springfield College. He continued into the second round with a win by fall (2:07) over Justin Marino of Western New England University. In the semifinals, Gomes was able to secure a trip to the final with a 4-2 decision over Jacob Venezia of Sacred Heart University. Gomes completed his undefeated day with a 6-3 decision over Connor Keegan of host Roger Williams in the championship bout.

The top seed in the 174-pound weight class, Maxwell opened the day with a 16-0 technical fall victory over Luke Wassel of Roger Williams in the quarterfinals.  After knocking off Lenny Breit also of RWU with a win by fall (1:30) in the semifinals, Maxwell posted a 9-4 decision against Christian Murphy of Johnson & Wales University to capture the 174-pound title.

Freshman Jeremias Collazo (Haverhill, Mass.) earned his first placing at a collegiate tournament as he finished second out of the 184-pound weight class. After automatically advancing to the quarterfinal with a first round bye, Collazo defeated top seeded Armani Dotson of Roger Williams with a 7-4 decision and followed that up with a 12-10 decision over John Summers hailing from Springfield College in the semifinals. In the finals for the 184-pound weight class, Collazo was pinned (1:16) by Charles Maloy of Western New England.

The BSU wrestling team returns to the mat on Saturday, January 8th when the Bears travel to Plymouth State University for a quad-meet against PSU, WPI and MIT.
