Maxwell, Gomes Lead Wrestling at Messiah Petrofes

GRANTHAM, Mass. – Senior Fox Maxwell (Winchester, Mass.) and junior Wilson Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) each placed second in the their respective weight class to lead the Bridgewater State University wrestling team during the second and final day of the prestigious Messiah Petrofes Invitational on Saturday at Hitchcock Arena in Grantham. Pennsylvania.

Maxwell went 4-1 over the weekend in the 174-pound weight class. After winning each of his first three bouts on Friday, Maxwell (12-4) cruised to a 9-0 major decision victory over David Reinhart of the University of Mount Union in the semifinals to advance to the championship bout. In the final, Maxwell dropped a tough 4-3 decision to #9 nationally ranked Demitrius Henry of SUNY Cortland.

Gomes also went 4-1 over the weekend in the 125-pound weight class. After winning each of his three bouts on Friday, Gomes (10-3) posted a dramatic 9-8 victory over Cody Merwin of SUNY Cortand in the semifinals to advance to the championship bout. Merwin was an honorable mention in the most recent d3wrestle.com poll. In the final, Gomes dropped a tough 4-1 decision to #8 nationally ranked Jack Stanley of Mount Union.

The Bears finished in tenth place in the team standings with 50.0 points. Muhlenberg won the team title with 147.5 points.

The  BSU wrestling team is back in action next Saturday (Dec. 11) when the Bears compete at the Scott Viera Open hosted by Roger Williams University.
