Gomes, Maxwell Place at Doug Parker Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University wrestling team placed 12th at the Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield College on Saturday.

The Bears finished with 47.5 team points on the day. Coast Guard Academy captured the team title at the meet with 162.5 points, while Centenary University (99.0 pts.) and Western New England University (84.5 pts.) rounded out the top three teams in the standings.

Seniors Wilson Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) and Fox Maxwell (Winchester, Mass.) both placed at the tournament. Gomes finished third in the 125-pound weight class, while Maxwell place fourth competing out of the 174-pound weight class.

Gomes, the top seed at 125, pinned each of his first two opponents before dropping a 10-5 decision to #5 seed Fred Luchs of Rhode Island College in the semifinals. Gomes bounced back with a 10-3 victory over #2 Greg Fischer of Wesleyan University in the third-place match.

Maxwell, who was seeded third at 174, won each of his first two bouts by technical fall. Maxwell battled to a 5-3 setback against #2 seed Joe Paul of Johns Hopkins University in the semifinals before dropping a tough 3-2 decision to #5 David McCullough of Coast Guard in the third-place match.

Gomes improves to 7-2 on the season with four pins. Maxwell is now 8-3 with five of the wins by technical fall.

The Bears are off until Friday, December 3rd and Saturday, December 4th when they compete at the two-day Messiah Petrofes Invitational.
