Wrestling Places Fifth at Roger Williams Invitational

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Bridgewater State University wresting team placed fifth on Saturday at the Roger Williams Invitational.

The Bears recorded 92 points to finish behind Johnson & Wales University (182.5 pts.), Castleton University (159.5 pts.), host Roger Williams (140.5 pts.) and Wesleyan University (102 pts.) in the team standings.

Five BSU grapplers placed at the tournament with senior Wilson Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) and junior Edwin Morales (Philadelphia, Pa.) finishing second in their respective weight classes.

Gomes went 3-1 competing as the number one seed out of the 125-pound weight class with two pins. Gomes pinned both Yuri Case of Plymouth State University and Antoine Grace of the University of Southern Maine while adding a 14-1 major decision victory over Roger Williams' Connor Keegan. Gomes dropped a 17-8 decision to unseeded Kaya Bogle of Castleton in the championship bout.

Morales also went 3-1 competing as the number one seed out of the 184-pound weight class. Morales posted a pair of major decision victories over Coast Guard's Kenneth Marra and #8 Blaise Bressler of Norwich University before posting a 7-5 semifinal round win against #4 Cole Shaughnessy of Roger Williams to advance to the finals. Morales dropped a 12-4 major decision to #2 Ryan Devivo of Johnson & Wales in the championship bout.

Senior 174-pounder Fox Maxwell (Winchester, Mass.), senior 157-pounder Devin Winn (Brockton, Mass.) and junior heavyweight Ryan Higgins (Billerica, Mass.) all placed fourth in their respective weight classes.

Maxwell battled back from a first round setback as the #2 seed in the 174-pound weight class to record five straight victories including a trio of technical fall wins over Lenny Breit of Roger Williams, Blaise Wagner of Stevens Tech. and #7 Jacob Cardozo also of Roger Williams.

Winn went 5-2 seeded sixth out to the 157-pound weight class. He won his first two bouts, including a pin of Wesleyan's Felix Clayton, before dropping a 9-2 decision to #3 Tyler Albis of Roger Williams in the quarterfinals. Winn bounced back with three straight wins to advance to third-place match where he dropped a 4-3 decision to unseeded Cameron Wooldridge of Norwich.

The #3 seed in the heavyweight bracket, Higgins won his first two bouts by his decision including a 9-6 win over #6 Abbas Abdulrahman of Castleton. After a loss by fall to second-seeded Jake Peavey of Southern Maine, Higgins came right back with a pin of his own over #5 Shea Garand of Castleton to advance to the third place match. Higgins lost by fall to #4 Addison Boisvert of Roger Williams to finish 3-2 on the day.

The Bears will be back on the mat next Saturday when they compete at the Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield College.
