Women's Lacrosse Falls to Sewanee, 13-12

SEWANEE. Tenn. -- The Sewanee women's lacrosse team scored three times in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter to post a 13-12 come-from-behind victory over visiting Bridgewater State University on Friday afternoon at Puett Field.

The Tigers improve to 7-2 on the season, while the visiting Bears fall to 2-3.

Sophomore attack Emma Burns (Libertyville, Ill.) paced Sewanee with a game-high five goals, while freshman defender Caroline Harlick (Waxhaw, N.C.) and senior midfielder Hadley Meadows (Lynchburg, Va.) notched two goals apiece.

Senior attack Katherine Tracy (Marion, Mass.) led Bridgewater State with two goals and a game-best three assists, while senior midfielder Delaney Langton (Scituate, R.I.) and freshman attack Nina Liguori (Agawam, Mass.) each found the back of the net twice. Senior attack Jacqueline DeLorey (Westwood, Mass.) checked in with a goal and two assist, and senior midfielder Hayley Carron (Hopedale, Mass.) added a goal and a helper.

The game was knotted at 6-6 after a tightly-contest first half which featured six ties. Third period goals by Carron, DeLorey, Langton and Liquori staked Bridgewater State to a 10-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Back-to-back strikes by Harlick and Burns to open the final period pulled the Tigers to within one at 10-9. Tracy converted off an assist from DeLorey at the 8:56 mark, and Harlick got one back for the Tigers with 7:26 left to play to keep it a one-goal game. Less than a minute later, Carron set up Tracy for her fifth marker of the afternoon to regain the two-goal advantage for the Bears.

An unassisted tally by Meadows with 4:54 showing on the scoreboard started Sewanee's late comeback. Burns tied the score at 12-12 with 2:20 remaining and junior midfielder Ellie Tate Schutte (Camp Lejeune, N.C.) potted the game-winner off a feed from classmate Lizzie Chamberlain (Amenia, N.Y.) with just 35 seconds left in regulation.

Shots (31-31) and turnovers (22-22) were even for the game, while Bridgewater State finished with a 25-21 edge in ground balls and an 18-11 advantage in draw controls. The Bears struggled on clear attempts, successfully converting just 9 of 17.

Langton led all players with seven draw controls, while graduate defender Kelsi Brennan (Dedham, Mass.) registered six draws. Brennan also scored a goal, forced two turnovers and recorded a game-high five ground balls.

Senior goalkeeper Molly Morris Charlottesville, Va.) made 13 saves to pick up her fourth win of the season between the pipes for Sewanee. Junior netminder Olivia Kerrigan (Braintree, Mass.) turned aside nine shots for Bridgewater State.

In upcoming action, the Bears entertain Wheaton College on Wednesday night at seven o'clock.
