Women's Lacrosse Edges Birmingham-Southern in Overtime, 16-15

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Senior attack Katherine Tracy (Marion, Mass.) scored just 39 seconds into overtime to lift the visiting Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team to a dramatic 16-15 victory over Birmingham-Southern College on Tuesday evening at Krulak Stadium.

The Bears even their 2022 record at 2-2 with the win, while the Panthers fall to 3-3.

Tracy finished with four goals and an assist on the evening, while senior attack Jacqueline DeLorey (Westwood, Mass.) paced the Bears with four goals and a pair of assists. Freshman attack Nina Liquori (Agawam, Mass.) also found the back of the net four times for Bridgewater State. The Bears also received a goal and three assists from senior midfielder Hayley Carron (Hopedale, Mass.) and a pair of strikes from senior attack Lindsay Brown (East Longmeadow, Mass.).

Sophomore attack Marissa Henderson (McDonough, Ga.) led the way for Birmingham-Southern with a game-high five goals to go along with an assist. Freshman midfielder Margot Peters (McDonough, Ga.) checked in with three goals and a helper for the Panthers, while senior attack Kathleen Napier (Burlingame, Calif.) also potted three goals and senior midfielder Lizzie LaVangie (Jacksonville, Fla.) notched a pair of markers.

The game featured 11 ties with neither team leading by more than two goals. With the score knotted at 13-13 in the fourth quarter, Liguori netted back-to-back unassisted goals to give the Bears a 15-13 lead with 7:25 remaining in the period. Peters pulled the Panthers to within one with 2:23 showing on the scoreboard and Napier converted off an assist from senior attack Liz Lee (Severna Park, Md.) just 19 seconds later to tie the score and send the game into overtime.

BSU graduate defender Kelsi Brennan (Dedham, Mass.) won the opening draw of the overtime session and Carron set up Tracy for the game-winning strike 39 seconds into the period.

Bridgewater State finished with a slight 31-29 shot advantage as well as a 23-12 edge in draw controls. Freshman midfielder Hannah Bowlby (Dalton, Mass.) led all players with 11 draw controls, while Brennan added seven draws and senior midfielder Delaney Langton (Scituate, R.I.) notched five.

Freshman Brooke La Torra (Oak Park, Calif.) and junior Olivia Kerrigan (Braintree, Mass.) combined to make six saves between the pipes for Bridgewater State. Kerrigan picked up the win in relief as she entered the game with 6:15 remaining in the third quarter and the score tied at 9-9.

Junior goalkeeper Jamie O'Meila (Atlanta, Ga.) turned aside eight shots for the Panthers.

Brennan, freshman defender Sarah Lombard (Ipswich, Mass.) and senior defender Taylor Carroll (Carver, Mass.) each recorded five ground balls. Birmingham-Southern freshman defender Bella Ayala (Canton, Ga.) led all players with seven ground balls.

The Bears are back in action on Friday afternoon (1:00 PM CST) when they travel to Sewanee, Tennessee to take on Sewanee (The University of the South).
