Women's Lacrosse Falls to Roger Williams in Home Opener, 18-4

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The visiting Roger Williams University women's lacrosse team cruised to an 18-4 non-conference victory over Bridgewater State University on Wednesday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Hawks improve to 2-1 on the season while the host Bears fall to 0-2. The game marked the home opener for Bridgewater State.

Roger Williams is now 7-2 versus BSU since the two teams first met back in 2009.

Nine different players scored for the visitors led by junior midfielder Lily Cunningham (Melrose, Mass.) who tallied a game-high six goals to go along with an assist for seven points. Junior attack Ryleigh Cavanaugh (Manchester, N.H.) added three goals and two assists for the Hawks, while sophomore attack Karli Chapin (Cape Elizabeth Langton, Mass.) and freshman Emma Terino (East Meadow, N.Y.) notched two goals apiece. RWU also received three points (1G, 2A) apiece from graduate attack Devon Sarazin (Falmouth, Maine) and junior midfielder Mandy Beck (Old Saybrook, Conn.).

Senior midfielder Delaney Langton (Scituate, R.I.) paced Bridgewater State with a pair of markers, while freshman midfielder Sarah Lombard (Ipswich, Mass.) and freshman attack Nina Liquori (Agawam, Mass.) each netted their first collegiate goal.

Cunningham potted a pair of goals while Chapin and senior attack Nikki Norton (Braintree, Mass.) each found the net in the first period to stake the visitors to a 4-1 lead after one. Langton scored the lone goal of the opening session for Bridgewater State.

The Hawks extended the lead to 8-2 at the break as Cavanaugh recorded a hat trick in the second quarter and Cunningham notched her third goal of the afternoon. Langton tallied her second goal of the day for Bridgewater State in the period.

After Terino and Lombard exchanged goals to open the second half, the Hawks reeled off nine straight tallies to put the game well out of reach. Cunningham scored three times and dished out an assist during the 9-0 run.

Liguori rounded out the scoring for the Bears with 2:25 left to play in the fourth quarter.

Roger Williams finished with a 33-14 shot advantage for the game as well as a 19-7 edge in draw controls.

Senior goalkeeper Hannah Goodwin (Bradford, Mass.) turned aside seven shots to record her second win of the season between the pipes for the Hawks. Junior Olivia Kerrigan (Braintree, Mass.) and freshman Brooke La Torra (Oak Park, Calif.) combined to make seven saves in the setback for the Bears.

Both teams are back in action later this week. The Bears travel to the University of New England on Friday afternoon for a five o'clock game with the Nor'easters, while the Hawks entertain Framingham State University on Saturday morning at eleven.
