Women's Lacrosse Falls to Coast Guard in Season Opener, 15-3

NEW LONDON, Conn – The Coast Guard Academy women's lacrosse team scored the final 12 goals of the game enroute to 15-3 win over Bridgewater State University in a constant rainstorm on Tuesday night at Cadet Memorial Field. The game marked the season-opener for both teams.

Senior midfielder Katherine Pittman (Nantucket, Mass.) scored three goals, dished out an assist and recorded a team-high five ground balls to lead the way for Coast Guard.

Freshman attack Laine Webber (Granite Bay, Calif.) added three goals for Coast Guard while freshman midfielder Kira Howard (Wilton, Conn.) and freshman attack Caitlyn Coates (Hanover, Pa.) each scored twice all in their collegiate debuts. Sophomore midfielder Addy Bass (Redondo Beach, Calif.) checked in with two goals and two assist in the win. Eight different player scored for the hosts.

The game was tied 3-3 before a goal by Howard with just eight seconds left in the first quarter gave Coast Guard a 4-3 lead.

Coates, Pittman and junior midfielder Brenda Anderson (Naperville, Ill.) also scored for Coast Guard in the first, while graduate midfielder Kelsi Brennan (Dedham, Mass.), junior midfielder Katie O'Brien (Pembroke, Mass.) and senior attack Lindsay Brown (East Longmeadow, Mass.) found the back of the net for Bridgewater State. The visitors, however, were held in check the rest of the way

Junior midfielder Gianna Cascio (Hunterdon County, N.J.), Weber, Coates, Pittman and Bass all scored second quarter goals as Coast Guard extended the lead to 9-3 heading into the break.

Weber, Howard, Bass, Pittman and junior midfielder Shannon Schmidt (Jamesport, N.Y.) added goals in the third as Coast Guard increased its lead to 14-3. Weber scored the only goal in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore goalkeeper Devon McCue (Annapolis, Md.) picked up her first career win in her first career start as she made four saves.

Junior netminder Olivia Kerrigan (Braintree, Mass.) started in goal and had seven saves for Bridgewater State while freshman Brooke La Torra (Oak Park, Calif.) had two saves in relief. La Torra was making her collegiate debut.

Senior attack Jacqueline Delorey (Westwood, Mass.) assisted on two of the Bears' three goals.

Coast Guard outshot Bridgewater State 31-9 and finished with a 35-16 edge in ground balls.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday afternoon. Coast Guard (1-0) entertains Endicott College at noon, while Bridgewater State (0-1) hosts Mount Holyoke College at one o'clock.
