Four Bears Garner MASCAC Women's Basketball Postseason Honors

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's basketball team was well-represented as the 2021-2022 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's basketball award winners were announced on Wednesday by MASCAC Director of Media Relations, Emily Loux.

Senior center Destiny Fitzgerald (Medford, Mass.), junior guard Sydney Bradbury (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and freshman guard Kylie Grassi (Plymouth, Mass.) were named to the All-MASCAC Second Team, while freshman center Jannise Avelino (Peabody, Mass.) was selected as the MASCAC Rookie of the Year.

Fitzgerald is making her second straight appearance on the All-MASCAC Second Team, while Avelino is the Bears' first Rookie of the Year since Shelly DePina in 2009.

Fitzgerald averaged 11.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocked shots in 21 games this season with a 53.2 shooting percentage (109-205). She currently ranks second in the MASCAC in blocked shots, fifth in field goal percentage and eighth in rebounding.

In 97 career games over four seasons with the Bears, Fitzgerald amassed 957 points, 616 rebounds, 74 assists, 129 blocked shots and 49 steals. She is second all-time in program history in blocks, third in field goal percentage (.507) and sixth in rebounds.

Bradbury appeared in all 28 games (27 starts) and averaged 12.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.3 steals while shooting 41.6% (122-293) from the floor, 35.9% (52-68) from behind the arc and 76.5% (52-68) at the free throw line. She presently ranks third in the MASCAC in three-point shooting percentage, ninth in assists and tenth in in scoring

Grassi appeared in 22 games and made 12 starts. She averaged 9.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting 36.4% (71-195) from the floor and 76.4% (55-72) at the charity stripe. Grassi currently ranks third in the MASCAC in free throw shooting.

Avelino averaged 9.5 points, 6.6 rebounds and 0.8 blocked shots in 18 games this season (12 starts) while shooting 54.3% (69-127) from the floor and 62.3% (33-53) at the free throw line. She currently ranks second in the MASCAC in field goal percentage and seventh in blocked shots.

Avelino's .543 shooting percentage marked the fifth highest in team history.

The BSU women’s basketball team wrapped up the 2021-2022 campaign with an overall record of 20-8 including a 10-2 mark in the MASCAC standings. Seeded second in the MASCAC Tournament, the Bears posted a 79-40 first round win over MCLA followed by the 84-71 semifinal round victory over Westfield State before falling to top-seeded Framingham State, 84-69, in the conference championship game.
