Jannise Avelino Named MASCAC Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – For the second time this season, Bridgewater State University freshman center Jannise Avelino has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week.

Avelino scored 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting and pulled down five rebounds to go along with a steal in the Bears' 94-82 MASCAC win over Westfield State University. The Peabody, Massachusetts product also went a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line in the victory over the Owls.

In 16 games this season, Avelino is averaging 8.5 points, 6.4 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game while shooting 52.3% (56-107) from the floor and 60% (24-40) at the free throw line. She currently ranks third in the MASCAC in both field goal percentage and blocks as well as 11th in rebounding.

Avelino also earned the MASCAC Rookie of the Week honor back on January 3rd.

The BSU women’s basketball team is presently 15-7 on the season and 7-2 in the MASCAC. The Bears entertain conference foe Worcester State University this evening at 5:30.
