BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University freshman center Jannise Avelino has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week.

Avelino averaged seven points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 58% (7-12) from the floor in two games at the St. Pete Classic held at Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg, Florida on December 19th and 20th. The Peabody, Massachusetts product notched 14 points, three rebounds and an assist in 76-58 setback to Messiah University, as well as six rebounds and an assist in a 77-73 loss to LaGrange College.

In eight games this season, Avelino is averaging 6.6 points and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 48% (21-44) from the floor. She currently ranks seventh in the MASCAC in blocked shots per game (0.6) and is also 11th overall in rebounding.

The BSU women’s basketball team is currently 8-5 on the season. The Bears are slated to open MASCAC play on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 8) when they travel to Salem State University to take on the Vikings at noon.
