Women's Basketball Dominates in 93-42 MASCAC Win Over Salem State

SALEM, Mass. – The visiting Bridgewater State University women's basketball team cruised to a 93-42 victory over Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe Salem State University on Thursday evening at Twohig Gymnasium.

The Bears improve to 12-7 on the season and 4-2 in the MASCAC while the Vikings fall to 3-15 overall and 1-6 in conference play. Bridgewater has won nine of the last ten meetings of the two teams and 15 of the last 17.

Freshman center Jannise Avelino (Peabody, Mass.) posted her second double-double of the season as she led all players with 16 points and 12 rebounds with six boards coming off the offensive glass. She also added three steals.

Junior guard Sydney Bradbury (East Bridgewater, Mass.) checked in with 15 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Bears, while freshman guard Kylie Grassi (Plymouth, Mass.) notched 14 points, two rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Hannah Moniz (Taunton, Mass.) came off the bench to score ten points on 5 of 7 shooting in 11 minutes of action.

Senior forward Irianis Delgado (Lynn, Mass.) paced Salem State with 13 points and nine rebounds, while junior forward Liz Zaiter (Peabody, Mass.) tallied 11 points and five rebounds, and sophomore guard Kylie Gates (Pembroke, Mass.) recorded ten points and five boards.

Bridgewater dominated the contest from start to finish.

The Bears led 23-15 after one and used a 16-3 run over the first six minutes of the second quarter to open up a 21-point lead (39-18). Fiver different players scored during the spurt including a pair of three-pointers from Bradbury and freshman forward Arielle Cleveland (Groveland, Mass.) as well as four point from senior forward Maggie Hester (Braintree, Mass.). Bridgewater would take a 44-20 lead into the break.

The BSU defense allowed only 18 points in the second half including just five in the fourth quarter. The Bears outscored the Vikings 49-18 over the final 20 minutes and got up by as many as 52 points.

The Bears shot 56% (36-64) from the floor for the game, including 9-for-16 (56%) from three-point range, and went 12-for-14 (86%) from the free throw line. Bradbury converted 3 of 6 from behind the arc, while Grassi was 2-for-2.

Bridgewater held Salem to 24% (17-71) shooting and the Vikings went 0-for-9 from behind the arc and 8-for-16 (50%) at the free throw line.

The MASCAC schedule continues for both teams on Saturday afternoon. The Bears travel to Worcester State University for a one o'clock game with the Lancers, while the Vikings head to Westfield State University to take on the Owls at noon.
