Women's Basketball Falls to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at NYU Tip-Off Classic

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. – The Bridgewater State University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season as the Bears dropped a 52-46 decision to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday night at the NYU Tip-Off Classic.

The Bears fall to 4-1 with the setback, while the Athenas improve to 2-1.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps never trailed in the game. The Athenas held a 25-23 lead at the break and took a 40-33 advantage into the fourth quarter. CMS got up by as many as 12 points (51-39) in the final period before a late 7-1 BSU run accounted for the final score of 52-46.

Junior forward Austyn Masuno (Long Beach, Calif.) posted a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds (five offensive) to lead the way for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Freshman forward Gwen Gilmore (Austin, Texas) added ten points and four rebounds for the Athenas. Gilmore connected on all three of her field goal attempts and went 4-for-5 at the free throw line.

Junior guard Sydney Bradbury (East Bridgewater, Mass.) paced Bridgewater State with 16 points, five rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot, while freshman forward Kylie Grassi (Plymouth, Mass.) checked in with nine points, three boards, a block and a steal. Junior guard Kylee Piché (Bridgewater, Mass.) contributed seven points, two rebounds and a steal.

Both teams struggled to shoot the ball. The Athenas connected on 38% (20-53) of their field goal attempts and went 1-for-14 from behind the arc and 11-for-19 (58%) at the free throw line. The Bears shot 33% (19-57) for the game and finished 0-for-7 from three-point range and 8-for-18 (44%) at the charity stripe. The two teams combined for 51 turnovers.

The NYU Tip-Off Classic continues on Sunday afternoon. The Bears take on Thiel College at one o'clock, while the Athenas face host New York University at three.
