Softball Splits MASCAC Doubleheader with Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University softball team split a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader with host Westfield State University on Monday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Bears see their record 15-14-1 on the season and 6-2 in the MASCAC, while the Owls are now 12-16 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

Game One: Westfield State 5, Bridgewater State 2

Sophomore righthander Stephanie Scoville (Northfield, Mass.) gave up just two unearned runs in the complete game effort for the Owls in game one. Scoville (5-6) scattered five hits, walked one and struck out four to record her fifth win of the season.

Westfield opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Senior centerfielder Lindsay Cordopatri Walpole, Mass.) singled with one out, stole second and advanced to third on throwing error by the catcher. Sophomore left fielder Jordyn Lummus (Pittsfield, Mass.) followed with an RBI single up the middle to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore designated player Lexus Mastromatteo (Worcester, Mass.) singled to lead off the fourth inning, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, to third on a ground out and scored on junior second baseman Megan Metzger's (Uxbridge, Mass.) RBI single.

The Owls extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth as third baseman Meghan Doyle drove in a run with an RBI single and scored all the way from first on Mastromatteo's RBI double.

The Bears cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth with a clutch two-out, two-run single by freshman second baseman Amelia Blake (Raynham, Mass.). Both of the runs were unearned.

The Owls got one back in the home half of the sixth on a bases loaded wild pitch to make it a 5-2 game.

Mastromatteo was the only batter to notch multiple hits in game one as she went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and RBI. Lummus reached safely three times as she added a pair of walks to her RBI single.

Junior first baseman Olivia Silva (Somerset, Mass.) singled and walked in three trips to plate to pace the BSU offense.

Freshman righthander McKayla Cusack (West Haven, Conn.) was saddled with the loss for the Bears in relief of sophomore starter Madelyn Klingel (Windsor, Conn.). Cusack (3-2) gave up four runs on six hits over 2 2/3 innings with a walk and a strikeout. Klingel worked two scoreless and hitless innings for the Bears as she walked two and fanned one.

Game Two: Bridgewater State 2, Westfield State 0

Reichert tossed a complete game shutout to lead the Bears to a 2-0 win in game two and a split of the doubleheader. Reichert (9-4) scattered four hits, walked three and fanned four to pick up her team-leading ninth win of the season and second shutout.

Freshman righthander Katherine Canty (Natick, Mass.) went the distance in the circle in the setback for Westfield State. Canty (3-5) gave up two runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Bridgewater broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning. Senior shortstop Megan Sharon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) singled to lead off the frame, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior second baseman Kerrin McLaughlin (Haverhill, Mass.).

The Bears tacked on a run in the seventh to make it a 2-0 game. Graduate catcher Madison Synan (Quincy, Mass.) singled and was replaced on the base paths by sophomore pinch runner Janet Jolly (Raynham, Mass.). Jolly stole second and later scored on sophomore right fielder Madison Flamme's (Bethel, Conn.) RBI double.

Flamme was the only batter to record multiple hits in game two as she went 2-for-4 with the RBI double. Blake walked twice in four plate appearances.

The MASCAC schedule continues for both teams next Saturday at noon. The Bears travel to Fitchburg State University for a pair of game with the Falcons, while the Owls host Salem State University in a doubleheader.
