Softball Blanks Dean in Game One of Twinbill, 10-0; Game Two Suspended Due to Darkness

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University softball team hosted Dean College in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at rainy Alumni Park. Thw twinbill marked the home opener for the Bears.

Bridgewater State cruised to a 10-0 victory in five innings in game one, while the second game was halted due to darkness with the Bears leading 12-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Prior to game one, BSU Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Dr. Joe Oravecz, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Game One

The Bears used a seven-run second inning to coast to a 10-0 victory in game one.  The game was ended after the top of the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Sophomore pitcher Madelyn Klingel (Windsor, Conn.) recorded her first collegiate shutout and first win of the season. Klingel (1-1) gave up just two hits, walked four batters and struck out three.

Graduate catcher Madison Synan (Quincy, Mass.) went 2-or-2 with a double, a stolen base and two RBI to lead the Bears' ten-hit attack, while freshman designated player Emily Marcotte (North Dighton, Mass.) singled twice in three at bats and scored  two runs. Senior shortstop Megan Sharon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) also finished with multiple hits for Bridgewater State as she went 2-for-3 with a stolen base, a run and an RBI.

Graduate centerfielder Alexandra Ruprecht (Kingston, Mass.) plated the first run of the game with a first inning sacrifice fly. Ruprecht added an RBI single and scored a run in the seven-run second. She also reached on a walk.

Junior second baseman Kerrin McLaughlin (Haverhill, Mass.) connected for a two-run double in the big second inning, while Sharon and sophomore first baseman Morgan Cournoyer (Burrillville, R.I.) added RBI singles in the frame.

Senior left fielder Miranda Seacord (Cambridge, N.Y.) went 1-for-1 with walk and a pair of stolen bases to lead the way for the visiting Bulldogs.

Game Two

Game two of the twinbill was halted with Bridgewater State leading 12-2 and batting in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Bears strung together nine hits and capitalized on five walks and three hit batsmen to produce 12 runs when the game was stopped with nobody out and a runner on second in the fourth.

Statistics for the contest are not official until the game is completed.

The Bears (5-3) are back in action on Friday afternoon when they travel to Rhode Island College for a doubleheader with the Anchorwomen. Game one of the twinbill is slated to get underway at three o'clock. The Bulldogs (1-6) are off until next Thursday afternoon when they head to Mass. Maritime Academy for a four o'clock doubleheader with the Buccaneers.
