BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Westfield State College swept a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader with Bridgewater State this afternoon at Alumni Park in Bridgewater. The Owls took game one by a score of 5-1, and completed the sweep with an 8-4 victory in game two.

Westfield improves to 18-8 on the season with the pair of wins and 5-3 in the MASCAC.  Bridgewater falls to 12-17 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

Sophomore Madeline Tomich (Alford, MA) picked up the win in the circle for the Owls in game one as she went the distance giving up just one run on three hits while walking two and striking out four.  After giving up a run in the first, Tomich (11-1) retired 20 of the last 23 batters she faced.

Offensively for Westfield, sophomore Kerin DeGirolamo (North Attleboro, MA) went 4-for-4 at the plate with a an RBI double, two runs scored and a stolen base.  DeGirolamo singled to lead off the first and came around to score on a run scoring single off the bat of senior Allison Allen (Peabody, MA).  She also doubled in a run in the second and singled and scored during the Owls' three-run fifth inning.

Senior Kim Brennan (Douglas, MA) had two hits, including a double, in four at bats for Westfield.  Brennan drove in DeGirolamo in the fifth with an RBI single.

Seniors Lauren Cucinnota (Franklin, MA) and Meghan Noyes (Stoughton, MA) combined to push across the Bears lone tally.  Cucinnota doubled to lead off the bottom of the first, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Noyes' RBI single.

Senior Jamie Ducinki (Duxbury, MA) suffered the loss in the circle for the Bears.  Ducinski (3-8) gave up five runs on ten hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Freshman Courtney Begin (Salem, MA) earned the complete game win for the Owls in game two.  Begin (4-1) allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out six.

BSC freshman Meghan Dunn (Colchester, CT) was tagged with the loss for Bridgewater State.  Dunn (7-6) also went the distance giving up eight runs (six earned) on ten hits with four walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Westfield opened the scoring in the top of the first as the Owls loaded the bases with nobody out following a leadoff triple by DeGirolamo and back-to-back walks to junior Alicia Gardner (Athol, MA) and Brennan.  Dunn looked like she might get out of the inning unscathed as she induced a foul pop out for the first out of the inning.  However, the next batter reached on a big infield error allowing two runners to score.

The Bears answered in the bottom half of the first as Noyes belted a two-run homer to left following a one-out single by sophomore Jordan McDermott (East Bridgewater, MA).

Westfield responded with a run in the second and two more in the third to take a 5-2 lead.  Bridgewater made it a one-run game with a two spot in the bottom of the fourth as sophomore Michaela Ferreira (Fall River, MA) and freshman Jennifer Shaw (Brockton, MA) connected on back-to-back doubles with Shaw coming around to score later in the inning on an infield error.

The Owls, however, put the game out of reach with a three-run sixth inning with the big hit being a two-out, two-run double by Brennan.

DeGirolamo went 2-for-3 in game two and scored two runs. Allen finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

McDermott and Noyes had two hits apiece for the Bears.
