PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Bridgewater State College softball team dropped a pair of games to Rhode Island College on Tuesday afternoon by scores of 4-0 and 4-2.

Senior pitcher Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) hurled a complete game shutout in game one and junior pinch hitter Laura DeNoncour (Johnston, RI) broke a deadlock with a pinch hit two-run double in game two to lift the Anchorwomen to the doubleheader sweep.

The Anchorwomen (14-4) win for the 12th time in the club’s last 13 games and raise their current win streak vs. the Bears (8-11) to eight games.

RIC used eight walks and five hits to down the Bears, 4-0, in game one. Deveines picked up her third shutout of the season and stayed unbeaten (6-0). Deveines did not let eight Bear hits harm her and she struck out two. Bridgewater State senior pitcher Kaitlin Morelli (Milford, MA) labored through four innings, giving up four runs, two of which were earned, on four hits and six walks in a losing effort (1-1).

RIC opened the scoring in the second as junior shortstop Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI) brought in sophomore left fielder Jaci Lata (Lisbon, NH) with a deep sacrifice fly to center.

The Anchorwomen added two more in the third as sophomore third baseman Cristina Bailey (Londonderry, NH) brought in one with a sacrifice fly and freshman right fielder Kristina Gingell (Pascoag, RI) plated another with an RBI single.

Junior first baseman Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) doubled in another insurance run in the fourth to close out the game’s scoring.

Bridgewater State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two as RIC sophomore starter Kyla Puccini (North Dighton, MA) walked a pair with two down. Junior first baseman Penny King (Hanover, MA) followed with a bloop single to knock in a run and senior right fielder Meg Noyes (Stoughton, MA) came home after an errant throw to the plate.

The lead was short-lived as RIC came back with two runs in the home half of the frame to tie the game, 2-2. Sophomore left fielder Shawna Parent (Middletown, RI) reached on an error and later scored as part of a double steal. Gingell, who had singled to put runners at the corners, came home on Mattoon’s RBI single to right center.

Bridgewater State threatened in the fifth, putting runners at second and third with one down. Puccini fielded a grounder back to the pitching circle and cut down the potential go-ahead run with a strike to the plate, then struck out the next batter to get out of the jam.

That proved to be costly as Panarelli singled, was sacrificed to second and went to third on Bailey’s single to left in the bottom half of the inning. DeNoncour came off the bench to double in what proved to be the game-winning runs.

Puccini earned the win (3-1), while BSC freshman Meghan Dunn (Colchester, CT) took the loss (4-3). Puccini allowed just one earned run on four hits and struck out four in a complete game effort.

Gingell went 3-for-4 with a run scored on the day. Panarelli went 3-for-8 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI, while Mattoon went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI.

BSC junior catcher Bridget Engwer (Wrentham, MA) went 3-for-6 in the doubleheader.
