Stalters, Lighten Eclipse School Marks to Lead Men's Track & Field at Jerry Gravel Classic

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Junior Corey Stalters (Norton, Mass.) and senior Matthew Lighten (Dalton, Mass.) each broke school records to lead the Bridgewater State University men's outdoor track & field team on Saturday at the Jerry Gravel Classic hosted by Westfield State University.

The Bears placed second in the team standings at the meet with 139 points.

Stalters captured top honors in the javelin as he shattered the school record with a distance of 205 feet, three inches (62.56m). Stalters eclipsed the previous BSU mark of 199 feet, six inches set by Joshua Moore in 2019.

Lighten placed first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.47 seconds as he broke his own school record of 10.72 seconds set earlier this season at the UMD Corsair Classic. Classmate Jacob DeAndrade (Taunton, Mass.) finished second in the 100 with a career-best time of 10.66 seconds.

Lighten also captured top honors in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.56 seconds. Freshman Gavin Weldon (Taunton, Mass.) placed third in the 200 with a career-best time of 22.22 seconds.

Freshman Chigozie Adigwe (Lowell, Mass.) won both the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. Adigwe posted a career-best time of 14.73 seconds in the 100 hurdles and recorded a time of 58.55 seconds in the 400 hurdles. Junior Dimetri Morris (North Andover, Mass.) finished second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15 seconds flat.

The Bears' foursome of Lighten, DeAndrade, freshman Nathan Candido (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Michael Young (Shrewsbury, Mass.) placed second in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 42.22 seconds.

Freshman Kevin McBirney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) was the first runner to cross the line in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:21.72.

Junior Exondus Barnes (East Providence, R.I.) won the high jump with a leap of six feet, four inches (1.93m). Barnes also placed second in the long jump with a distance of 21 feet, 1.5 inches (6.44m).

Junior Jacob Belcher (Halifax, Mass.) finished second in the hammer throw with a toss of 148 feet, 11 inches (45.38m).

Lighten currently ranks second in all of Division III in the 100, while DeAndrade is 15th in the event. Stalters is fourth among the DIII javelin throwers, and Adigwe and Morris are 13th and 28th, respectively, in the 110 hurdles.

The BSU outdoor track & field teams will compete next Friday at the 13th Annual Eastern Invitational hosted by Eastern Connecticut State University.
