Men's Track & Field Competes at Springfield College Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's outdoor track & field team competed at the Springfield College Classic hosted by Springfield College on Saturday.

Junior Exondus Barnes (East Providence, R.I.) took second place in the high jump with a leap of six feet, 6.75 inches (2.00m).

Senior Matthew Lighten (Dalton, Mass.) captured top honors in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Lighten posted a time of 10.93 seconds in the 100 and 21.49 seconds in the 200.

Junior Jacob Belcher (Halifax, Mass.) won the discus with a toss of 111 feet (33.84m) and placed second in the hammer throw with a distance of 140 feet, four inches (42.77m). Belcher also finished second in the shot put posting a mark of 38 feet, five inches (11.71m).

Freshman Kevin McBirney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) was the first runner to cross the finish line in the 1,500-meter run as he recorded a time of 4:07.24.

Sophomore Jason Dann (Reading, Mass.) tossed the hammer 132 feet, one inch (40.26) to place third in the event.

Capping off the day for the Bears, the 4x400-meter relay team comprised of McBirney, Sam Steere (West Kingston, Ri.), freshman Charles Dakai (Millville, Mass.) and freshman Stephen Spofford (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished third with a time of 3:42.76. 

Several members of the BSU men's track & field team will run on Friday night at the Silfen Invitational Elite Distance held at Connecticut College. The majority of the team will compete next Saturday at the Jerry Gravel Classic hosted by Westfield State University.
