Lighten Leads Men's Outdoor Track & Field at Corsair Classic

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Senior Matthew Lighten (Dalton, Mass.) won two individual events and set a school record to lead the Bridgewater State University men's outdoor track & field team on Saturday at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic.

The Bears placed second in the team standings with 137 points finishing, narrowly getting bested by host UMass Dartmouth (150 pts.). Eastern Connnecticut State University rounded out the top three teams finsihing with 118 points.

Lighten placed first in the 100-meter dash with a finals and school-recod time of 10.72 seconds, and finished first in the 200-meter dash with a career-best time of 21.47 seconds.

Lighten also ran a leg on the Bears' first place 4x100-meter relay team along with freshman Nathan Candido (Taunton, Mass.), fellow senior Jacob DeAndrade (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Michael Young (Shrewsbury, Mass.). The foursome posted a winning time of 43.47 seconds.

Exondus Barnes (East Providence, Ri.) took first place in the high jump with a leap of six feet, 4.75 inches (1.95m) and finished second in the long jump with a mark of 21 feet, 0.75 inches (6.42m).

In the 110-meter hurdles, junior Dimetri Morris (North Andover, Mass.) captured top honors with a time of 15.10 seconds, while freshman Chigozie Adigwe (Lowell, Mass.) finished second with a time of 15.39 seconds.

Also capturing individual titles were junior Corey Stalters (Norton, Mass.) in the javelin and freshman Kevin McBirney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) in the 800-meter run. Statlers took first in javelin with a throw of 188 feet, five inches (57.42m) while McBirney captured the title in the 800 with a time of 2:00.04.

Next weekend, the Bears will compete at the Springfield College Classic hosted by Springfield College.
