Men's Track & Field Competes at Massasoit Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University men's track & field team competed at the non-scoring Massasoit Classic hosted by Springfield College on Saturday at the Springfield Field House.

Senior Jacob DeAndrade (Taunton, Mass.) placed first in the 60-meter dash with a finals time of 6.91 seconds, while sophomore Dimetri Morris (North Andover, Mass.) captured top honors in the 60-meter hurdles with a finals time of 8.38 seconds. Morris is currently ranked 17th in all of Division III in the hurdles.

Junior Exondus Barnes (East Providence, R.I.) placed first in the high jump with a leap of six feet, 4.75 inches (1.95m) and added a second-place showing in the long jump (22'2.5"/6.77m).

Junior Oliver Erickson (Mansfield, Mass.) finished second in the shot put with a toss of 44 feet, 1.25 inches (13.44m), and junior Jacob Belcher (Halifax, Mass.) checked in with a third-place performance in the weight thrown(44'9.5"/13.65m).

The Bears' distance runners rounded out the top highlights from Saturday's meet. Junior Ryan Goldman (Franklin, Mass.) placed second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:35.09, while freshman Kevin McBirney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) finished fourth in the 1,000-meter run (2:33.84) and sophomore Sam Steere (West Kingston, R.I.) was the fourth harrier to cross the finish line in the 3,000-meter run (9:52.52).

DeAndrade (60), Morris (60H) and Barnes (HJ) each recorded qualifying marks for both the Division III New England Championships and NEICAAA Championships in their respective events. Barnes (LJ), Erickson (SP) and McBirney (1,000) also qualified for DIII New Englands.

Bridgewater State finished second in the team standings with 121 points. AIC captured the meet title with 188 points, while host Springfield (111.5 points) rounded out the top three teams.

Next Saturday, the Bears will compete at the Branwen Smith-King Invitational hosted by Tufts University.
