Men's Indoor Track & Field Captures Wheaton Invitational Title

NORTON, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's indoor track & field team captured the Wheaton Invitational title on Saturday at the Beard Field House.

The Bears recorded 168 team points as they outdistanced the Engineers of WPI who finished with 132 points. Colby College rounded out the top three teams at the meet with 96 points.

Five different Bears captured individual titles at the meet.

Graduate student Trevor Wysong (Taunton, Mass.) was the first to cross the finish line in the 3,000-meter run as he checked in with a time of 8:43.23.

Senior Jacob DeAndrade (Taunton, Mass.) placed first in the 60-meter dash with a finals time of 6.91 seconds, and added a second-place performance in the 300-meter dash (35.88).

Fellow senior Matthew Lighten (Dalton, Mass.) grabbed top honors in the 300-meter dash (35.35) and finished second in the 60-meter dash (7.00).

Junior Exondus Barnes (East Providence, R.I.) won the high jump with a leap of six feet, 4.75 inches (1.95m), while classmate Jacob Belcher (Halifax, Mass.) rounded out the Bears' event winners with a weight throw mark of 46 feet, two inches (14.08m).

Junior Oliver Erickson (Mansfield, Mass.), freshman Kevin McBirney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and sophomores Thomas Barinelli (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Domani Domerson (Brookline, Mass.) each added second place showings for Bridgewater State. Erickson recorded a distance of 42 feet, five inches (12.94m) in the weight throw, while McBirney posted a time of 4:31.77 in the mile and Barinelli leaped 21 feet, 4.25 inches (6.51m) in the long jump. Domerson checked in with a mark of 39 feet, 11.50 inches (12.18m) in the triple jump.

DeAndrade (60m), Lighten (60m) and Barnes (high jump) qualified for both the Division III New England Championships and NEICAAA Championships, while Wysong (3,000m) and Barinelli (long jump) qualified for DIII New Englands.

Barinelli and freshman Chigozie Adigwe (Lowell, Mass.) also qualified for DIII New Englands in the 60-meter hurdles. Barinelli finished seventh (8.98) in the hurdles, while Adigwe placed fifth (8.59).

The Bears are back in action next Saturday when they compete at the Massasoit Classic hosted by Springfield College.
