Men's Tennis Posts 7-2 Little East Win Over WestConn

DANBURY, Conn. -- The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team grabbed sole possession of first place in the Little East Conference (LEC) standings with a 7-2 victory over Western Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon at the Westside Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 4-3 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in the Little East while the Wolves fall to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Birdgewater swept the three doubles matches and captured four of the six singles flights.

In doubles play, Ryan Hebert (Taunton, Mass.) and Tyler Barros (Somerset, Mass.) got the Bears on the board with an 8-2 win at the third fliight, while Robby Cooney (Plymouth, Mass.) and Matthew Krampf (Littleton, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-3 victory at the second spot. Adam Beatrice (Rockland, Mass.) and Tom Ayson (Plymouth, Mass.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 decision at number one.

Cooney cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 straight set triumph at number one singles and Barros secured the decisives fifth point with a 6-0, 6-3 straight set win at the sixth flight.

Krampf also won in straight sets at number four, 6-3, 6-4. Ayson battled back from a set down to earn a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory at the third flight.

The Wolves' lone points of the match came at second and fifth singles. Aidan Burke (Wilton, Conn.) outlasted Beatrice at the second flight in a super tiebreaker, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 10-5, while Jason Lee (New Canaan, Conn.) recorded a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 straight set decision at number five.

The Bears entertain Wentworth on Monday afternoon at 3:30.

Notes: Cooney improves to 4-1 in singles play on the season with his third straight win. Barros (3-1) has also won three straight matches in singles play.
