Men's Soccer Advances to MASCAC Semifinals with 6-0 Win over Worcester State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Third-seeded Bridgewater State University cruised to a 6-0 shutout victory over #6 Worcester State University in the quarterfinal round of the 2021 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men's Soccer Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Swenson Field.

With the win, the Bears (8-9) advance to the tournament semifinal round as they will travel to Framingham State University on Friday evening to take on the second-seeded Rams at six o'clock. The Lancers end the 2021 season with an overall record of 3-11-1.

Junior forward Robson Montrond (Brockton, Mass.) scored a pair of goals and classmate David Nelson (East Bridgewater, Mass.) added a goal and two assists to lead Bridgewater State to the victory.

The Bears potted a pair of first-half header goals to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Montrond drove a header into the back of the net off a left-footed corner sent into the box by freshman midfielder Carsten Boloz (Southborough, Mass.) to open the scoring 7:18 into the contest.

Grad midfielder Kevin Roberts (Medway, Mass.) made it a 2-0 game in the 20th minute. Nelson made a run down the right sideline and sent a left-footed cross into the box. Roberts' header snuck under the crossbar for his second goal of the 2021 campaign.

Nelson notched his sixth goal of the season less than five minutes into the second half to extend the lead to 3-0. Nelson worked a give-and-go with sophomore midfielder Dan Santos (Milford, Mass.) and tucked a close-range shot into the left side of the cage.

Montrond tallied his second goal of the afternoon and team-leading ninth of the season in the 56th minute to make it a 4-0 game. Montrond outworked two defenders to the left of the 18, cut back inside and fired a shot inside the far post from ten yards out.

Boloz and freshman forward Ethan Lafontant (Chelmsford, Mass.) found the back of the net just 23 seconds apart to cap off the scoring. Boloz slipped a shot inside the right post off a short crossing pass from Lafontant in the 73rd minute for his second goal of the season. Just moments later, Lafontant converted off a steal and nice feed from Nelson as he beat the oncoming Lancer netminder with a shot from the right side of the 18. The goal marked Lafontant's fifth of the year.

Bridgewater State finished with a 20-17 shot advantage for the game as well as a 6-3 edge in corner kick attempts.

BSU senior goalkeeper William Russell (Sandwich, Mass.) made five saves to record his sixth win and second shutout of the season.

Sophomore netminder Andy Ramirez (Waltham, Mass.) turned aside seven shots in the setback for the Lancers.
