Men's Soccer Posts 2-1 Win Over MCLA in Regular Season Finale

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The visiting Bridgewater State University men's soccer team capped off regular season play with a 2-1 victory over Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe MCLA on Friday evening at Shewcraft Field.

The Bears improve to 7-9 on the season with the win and 5-2 in the MASCAC, while the host Trailblazers fall to 4-10-1 overall and 2-5 in conference play. Bridgewater State will be seeded third in next week's MASCAC Tournament and will host a first round game on Tuesday. Tournament pairings and times will be announced tomorrow in the late afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, Robson Montrond (Brockton, Mass.) got the Bears on the board in the 53rd minute with his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Junior forward David Nelson (East Bridgewater, Mass.) fired a shot from the right side that was deflected by a defender and then glanced off the far post. Montrond collected the rebound just outside the six and buried a shot under the crossbar.

Freshman forward Ethan Lafontant (Chelmsford, Mass.) extended the BSU lead to 2-0 in the 71st minute with his fourth goal of the 2021 campaign. Freshman forward Brent Ghelfi (Halifax, Mass.) picked up the assist on the strike as he headed the ball over to Lafontant on the left side following a long volley into the 18. Lafontant corralled the pass and beat the keeper one-on-one with a shot inside the left post.

The trailblazers converted off a corner kick in the 86th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1. Senior defender David Jamina (Lowell, Mass.) potted his first goal of the season as he headed home the rebound of a Junior Florent (Spring Valley, N.Y.) shot.

Bridgewater State finished with a 20-12 shot advantage for the game, while MCLA held a 5-2 edge in corner kick attempts.

Senior goalkeeper William Russell (Sandwich, Mass.) made five saves between the pipes for the Bears to record his fifth win of the season. Junior netminder Sam Edge (Williamstown, Mass.) turned aside six shots in the setback for the Trailblazers.
