Men's Soccer Posts 3-1 Win Over Worcester State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University men's soccer team posted a 3-1 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) victory over visiting Worcester State University on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Bears improve to 4-7 on the season and 2-2 in the MASCAC with the win, while the Lancers fall to 3-5-1 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Bridgewater State is now 26-20-2 versus the Lancers since 1980.

Junior forward Robson Montrond (Brockton, Mass.) opened the scoring in the 20th minute with his team leading sixth goal of the season. Montrond headed home a well-placed crossing pass from junior forward David Nelson (East Bridgewater, Mass.) inside the right post.

Sophomore midfielder Dan Santos (Milford, Mass.) extended the BSU lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute. Off a restart from the right of the 18, freshman midfielder Carsten Boloz (Southborough, Mass.) sent the free kick inside the six and Santos one-timed a shot into the left side of the cage for his first goal in a BSU uniform.

A header goal by freshman forward Santino Romeo (Sutton, Mass.) off a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Manny Ramirez (Waltham, Mass.) cut the Lancers deficit in half just 61 seconds into the second half.

Junior midfielder Joseph Madden Jr. (Milford, Mass.) answered for the Bears in the 59th minute with his first of the season to reclaim the two-goal advantage. Nelson and Boloz each recorded their second assist of the afternoon on the strike. Off a short pass from Boloz, Nelson sent a crossing pass towards the back post which was redirected into the cage on a sliding one-timer from Madden.

Worcester State finished with a 16-14 shot advantage for the game as well as an 8-2 edge in corner kick attempts. Seven of the Lancers' eight corners came in the second half.

Senior goalkeeper William Russell (Sandwich, Mass.) made six saves to record his second win of the season between the pipes for the Bears, while sophomore netminder Andy Ramirez (Waltham, Mass.) turned aside four shots in the setback for Worcester State.

In upcoming action, the Bears entertain Wheaton College on Tuesday night at seven, while the Lancers travel to Fisher College on Thursday afternoon for a three o'clock game with the Falcons.
