Men's Soccer Drops 4-0 Decision to RWU

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University men's soccer team posted a 4-0 shutout victory over visiting Bridgewater State University on Tuesday night at Bayside Field.

The Hawks improve to 4-4-2 on the season, while the Bears fall to 2-6. Roger Williams is now 11-11-4 against Bridgewater State since 1980.

RWU scored three times during a ten-minute span of the first half to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

Senior forward Jack Wetzel (Northport, N.Y.) got the scoring started for the Hawks in the 19th minute as he collected a long pass on the right side from sophomore midfielder CJ Sousa (Fall River, Mass.), dribbled into the box and ripped a shot inside the far post.

Just under two minutes later, Wetzel extended the lead to 2-0 as he tucked a shot into the top right corner of the net from 30 yards out. Sousa picked up his second assist of the evening on the strike.

Junior midfielder Javi Beltran (Madrid, Spain) capped off the three-goal outburst in the 29th minute with his team-leading seventh marker of the season. In transition off a BSU giveaway, senior forward Ryan Miller (Hillsdale, N.J.) slipped a pass from the top of the 18 to Beltran on the right side who beat the BSU netminder with a shot inside the far post.

Roger Williams took a 3-0 lead into the break as the Hawks outshot the Bears 12-5 over the first 45 minutes.

The Hawks capitalized on another BSU miscue in the 68th minute to pot the only goal of the second half. Miller intercepted a pass in the Bears' defensive zone, dribbled to the top of the 18 and slid a short pass over to freshman midfielder Tommy Bowen (Manchester, Mass.) who delivered a shot into the right side of the cage.

RWU finished with a 17-11 shot advantage for the game as well as a slight 3-2 edge in corner kick attempts.

Junior goalkeeper John Padavano (Flemington, N.J.) was forced to make just two saves as he recorded his first shutout of the season between the pipes for the Hawks.

Senior netminder William Russell (Sandwich, Mass.) played the first 45 minutes in goal for the Bears and turned aside one shot. Freshman Stephen Jackowski (Douglas, Mass.) came on in relief to start the second half and also recorded one save in his collegiate debut.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday. The Bears travel to Fitchburg State University to take on the Falcons at 11:00 AM in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup. The Hawks head to Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) rival Endicott College for a seven o'clock game with the Gulls.
