Field Hockey Drops Season Finale to Castleton, 4-2

CASTLETON, Vt. – Sophomore forward Emily Harris (Crondall, England) scored four goals to lead the Castleton University field hockey team to a 4-2 Little East Conference (LEC) victory over visiting Bridgewater State University on Friday afternoon at Dave Wolk Stadium.

The game marked the season finale for both teams. The Spartans improve to 7-11 on the year and 5-7 in the Little East, while the Bears end the 2021 season with an overall record of 5-12 including a 3-9 mark in conference play.

Harris converted off a penalty corner less than two minutes into the contest with freshman midfielder Haley Corlew (Granville, N.Y.) setting up the strike.

BSU senior forward Katie Swart (Bridgewater, Mass.) knotted the score at 1-1 midway through the opening period with her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Swart collected a shot off the stick of senior forward Victoria Camara (Westport, Mass.) and tucked a backhander past the Castleton keeper.

Harris reclaimed the lead for the Spartans later in the first quarter as she beat the BSU netminder with a long-range backhander. Harris completed the first half hat trick 4:10 into the second quarter off an assist from junior forward Kaitlin Bardellini (Northfield, N.H.). Harris stickhandled in from the right side and slipped a shot inside the left post to give the hosts a 3-1 lead at the break.

Harris potted her fourth goal of the contest and school-record 30th of the season with 2:21 remaining in the third quarter. Harris fired a shot inside the right post from ten-yards out to extend the Spartan lead to 4-1.

Camara cut the deficit to 4-2 just before time expired in the third quarter as she equaled Swart for the team lead in goals with her fifth of the year. Camara bounced a long-range shot past the Castleton goalkeeper and just inside the left post with Swart picking up the assist.

Castleton finished with a 28-10 shot advantage for the game as well as a 17-7 edge in penalty corner attempts.

Sophomore Hannah Frittenburg (Intervale, N.H) turned aside six shots in the win for the Spartans, while freshman goalkeeper Emily Ronan (North Billerica, Mass.) made 16 saves in the setback for the Bears. Ronan played every minute of every game in her first season of collegiate competition and finished the year with 147 saves.
