Field Hockey Falls to Eastern Connecticut, 3-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Eastern Connecticut State University field hockey team posted a 3-1 victory over visiting Bridgewater State University in a Little East Conference (LEC) matchup on Tuesday afternoon at Rick McCarthy Field.

The Warriors improve to 7-3 on the season and 5-1 in the Little East, while the visiting Bears fall to 4-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

Sophomore forward Isabel Sanchez (Weston, Conn.) potted a pair of goals for Eastern Connecticut while freshman midfielder Liz LaMarco (West Hartford, Conn.) added a goal and two assists.

Sanchez opened the scoring 8 ½ minutes into the contest. LaMarco located her wide-open teammate waiting on the left side of the goal to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore forward Zoe Bergeron (Blackstone, Mass.) got the Bears on the board midway through the second quarter with her third goal of the season. Classmate Hannah Rolfe (Easton, Mass.) deflected a long shot by senior defender Aidan Ryan (Uxbridge, Mass.) over to Bergeron who beat the Eastern netminder to knot the score at 1-1.

Sanchez reclaimed the lead for the Warriors just 13 seconds into the third quarter. LaMarco made a nice run into the circle and found a wide-open Sanchez again on the left side of the field who buried her firth goal of the season.

LaMarco would tack on an insurance tally for Eastern with 11:23 remaining in regulation to give the Warriors a 3-1 lead and close out the scoring. LaMarco had a hand in all three Eastern goals.

Eastern held a decided 18-5 shot advantage for the game as well as a 14-3 edge in penalty corners.

Junior goalkeepers Sarah Gallagher (South Windsor, Conn.) and Erin Fainer (Thomaston, Conn.) combined to make four saves as they each played 30 minutes. Gallagher earned her sixth win of the season.

Freshman netminder Emily Ronan (North Billerica, Mass.) turned aside eight shots in the setback for the Bears.

The Little East schedule continues for both teams later on this week. The Bears travel to Danbury, Connecticut on Saturday for a noontime game with Western Connecticut State University, while the Warriors entertain Westfield State University on Friday afternoon at four.
