Field Hockey Drops 1-0 Decision to Anna Maria

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The visiting Anna Maria College field hockey team edged Bridgewater State University, 1-0, on Thursday night at Swenson Field.

The AMCATS improve to 3-6 on the season, while the Bears fall to 3-5. The two teams have met each of the last ten seasons with Bridgewater State holding a 6-4 advantage during that stretch.

Anna Maria graduate forward Brittney Cherry (Worcester, Mass.) broke scoreless tie 3:45 into the third quarter with her second goal of the season. Stationed to right of the net, Cherry redirected a shot by classmate Allyson Shaw (Worcester, Mass.) that initially was going wide of the cage.

Junior goalkeeper Hannah Tobey (Falmouth, Mass.) made eight saves between the pipes for the AMCATS as she recorded her second shutout of the season. Anna Maria also received a pair of defensive saves from freshman defender Kayla Proia (Maynard, Mass.).

Freshman netminder Emily Ronan (North Billerica, Mass.) stopped six shots in the setback for the Bears. Sophomore midfielder Charlotte McElroy (Carver, Mass.) and senior defender Aidan Ryan (Uxbridge, Mass.) each added a defensive save for the hosts.

Bridgewater State finished with a 14-12 shot advantage for the game as well as a 6-4 edge in penalty corner attempts.

The Bears had a two-player advantage for one minute and 22 seconds during the fourth quarter but were unable to capitalize.

The only shot of the fourth quarter came off the stick of the AMCAT's Shaw with McElroy making the defensive stop to keep it a 1-0 game.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday. The Bears travel to Keene State College for a 1:30 Little East Conference (LEC) game with the Owls. The AMCATS head to Regis College to take on the Pride at noon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup.
