Field Hockey Blanks Dean, 4-0

FRANKLIN, Mass. – Sophomore forward Zoe Bergeron (Blackstone, Mass.) tallied a goal and an assist to lead the visiting Bridgewater State University field hockey team to a 4-0 shutout victory over Dean College on Tuesday afternoon at Grant Field.

The Bears improve to 2-3 on the season while the host Bulldogs fall to 0-6.

Senior forward Katie Swart (Bridgewater, Mass.) opened the scoring with 5:39 remaining in the second period as she converted off a scramble in front of the net for her first goal of the 2021 campaign.

The Bears would take a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

After a scoreless third period, the Bears potted three goals over the last nine minutes of the game to pull away for the 4-0 victory.

Senior forward Victoria Camara (Westport, Mass.) extended the lead to 2-0 with 8:54 left to play in the fourth quarter. A long crossing pass from junior midfielder Bailey Turner (Dedham, Mass.) deflected off a Dean defender and onto the stick of Bergeron. Bergeron tapped the ball over to Camara who slipped a shot past the Dean goalkeeper for her first goal of the season.

Sophomore forward Kelly Sharkey (Salisbury, Mass.) notched her first goal in a BSU uniform with 7:38 remaining in the contest. Just over five minutes later, Bergeron tallied her team-leading second goal of the season to complete the scoring for the Bears. Senior defender Aidan Ryan (Uxbridge, Mass.) sent a long pass to the front of the net. Bergeron corralled a loose ball to the right of the cage and slipped a shot inside the near post.

BSU freshman goalkeeper Emily Ronan (North Billerica, Mass.) stopped the only shot she faced to record her first collegiate shutout.

Sophomore netminder Mackenzie Fillion (New Bedford, Mass.) finished with six saves for the Bulldogs. Dean also received a defensive save from junior defender Zoe Coleman (Warwick, R.I.).

Bridgewater State held a 15-1 shot advantage for the game as well as a 6-1 edge in penalty corners.

In upcoming action, the Bears host Little East Conference (LEC) foe University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon at three o'clock. The Bulldogs entertain Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) rival Colby-Sawyer College on Friday afternoon at four.
