Field Hockey Falls to Westfield State, 4-0

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The Westfield State University field hockey team posted a 4-0 shutout victory over visiting Bridgewater State University on Saturday afternoon in a Little East Conference (LEC) matchup at Alumni Field.

The win marked the first of the season for the Owls who improved to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the Little East. The visiting Bears fall to 1-3 on the season and 0-1 in the LEC.

Westfield received goals from four different scorers and senior goalkeeper Riley Goulet (Marion, Mass.) made four saves to earn the shutout.

Sophomore midfielder Corryn Moroney (South Hadley, Mass.) opened the scoring for the Owls with a shot from the middle of the circle midway through the second quarter. Westfield boosted its lead to 2-0 six minutes later when freshman forward Kelsi McDevitt (Gilbertsville, Pa.) converted a centering pass from Moroney.

The Owls went up 3-0 midway through the third period, taking advantage of a penalty corner as sophomore midfielder Lauren Champiney (Somers, Conn.) won the ball in a scrum in front of the goalkeeper, then pushed a shot past the keeper which was tipped in by freshman forward Leah Pierce (Barnstable, Mass.).

Senior forward Allie Gigure (Lynn, Mass.) scored off the rebound of her own shot to cap off the scoring late in the third quarter.

Goulet made three of her four saves in the fourth quarter to preserve the shutout. Westfield also received a defensive save from sophomore defender Bre Foley (South Hadley, Mass.).

Freshman goalkeeper Emily Ronan (North Billerica, Mass.) stopped six shots between the pipes for Bridgewater State.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock. The Owls entertain Rivier College, while the Bears travel to Dean College.
