Baseball Falls to Montclair State in Myrtle Beach, 17-2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Montclair State University baseball team posted a 17-2 victory over Bridgewater State University on Tuesday afternoon at Pelicans Stadium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The Red Hawks improve to 7-3 on the season, while the Bears fall to 2-3.

Montclair banged out 23 hits in the contest including 11 doubles.

Senior third baseman Joe Norton went 4-for-5 at the plate with a pair of doubles, three stolen bases, a walk, five runs scored and an RBI to lead the way for the Red Hawks. Senior first baseman Peter Cosentino was 3-for-6 with three doubles, two runs scored and six runs batted in, while junior designated hitter Sam Angelo went 3-for-3 with a sacrifice fly, a run scored and two RBI.

Junior right fielder Ryan McKenna (2-4, 2 2B, BB, 3R), sophomore left fielder Jorden Jurkiewicz (2-5, 2B, 2R, RBI), sophomore centerfielder Michael Murphy (2-5, 2B, R, 3RBI) and senior shortstop Jason Moore (2-5, 2B, R, RBI) also finished with multiple hits for Montclair.

Freshman leftfielder Nicolas Curcio (Hackettstown, N.J.) tossed five solid innings to pick up the win on the mound for the Red Hawks. Curcio (2-0) allowed just one run on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Freshman second baseman Scott Emerson (Peabody, Mass.) went 3-for-5 with a run scored to pace Bridgewater State's ten-hit attack. Senior designated hitter Jonathan O'Donnell (Hull, Mass.) also finished with multiple hits for the Bears as he was 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Junior first baseman Dan Saraceno (Mansfield, Mass.) went 1-for-3 with a stolen base, a walk and run scored, while sophomore catcher Mathew Pigeon (Canton, Mass.) singled and walked in two plate appearances.

Three Bridgewater State pitchers combined to give up 17 runs (14 earned) on 21 hits over eight innings with three walks, a hit by pitch and six strikeouts. Junior pitcher Jake Graham (East Bridgewater, Mass.) tossed a scoreless ninth inning for the Bears and recorded one strikeout.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday night as they take on Coast Guard Academy at 6:30 in Myrtle Beach.
