Bruce W. Higgins, Jr. played guard on the men's basketball team from 1993 to 1997. As a senior captain during the 1996-97 season, Bruce was selected to the All-MASCAC First Team and was named the Bridgewater State Male Athlete of the Year as he averaged 18.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.9 steals per game. In 1993-94, Bruce was named the ECAC New England Co-Rookie of the Year as he jumped onto the BSC basketball scene by averaging 19.7 points and 5.0 rebounds as a freshman. For his career Bruce ranks first in career free throws made with 442 and free throws attempted with 566. He is also fourth all-time at Bridgewater in free throw percentage at .781. In his senior year, Bruce set the school single-season (since broken) and career records for steals as he recorded 77 steals that season to finish with 247 in his career. In his 106 games played, Bruce finished his career ranked third all-time at Bridgewater in scoring with 1,727 points. Bruce earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Bridgewater State in 1997 as well as his Master's degree in Criminal Justice from Western New England College in 2001. A Boston police officer, Bruce currently resides in Hyde Park with his wife, Lori; daughter, Madelyn; and son, Ryan.
