Women's Tennis Downs Salem State, 7-2, in Little East Match

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The visiting Bridgewater State University women's tennis team posted a 7-2 victory over Salem State University in a Little East Conference (LEC) match on Tuesday afternoon at the SSU Tennis Courts.

The Bears, who captured two of the three doubles flights and five of the six singles matches, improve to 3-5 on the season and 2-2 in the Little East. The host Vikings fall to 1-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

BSU graduate student Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) and senior Angelique Gray (Barnstable, Mass.) earned an 8-4 decision at second doubles, while junior Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) posted an 8-2 win at number three.

Seniors Anastasia Startseva (Volgograd, Russia) and Meredith Macdonald (Lynn, Mass.) picked up the Vikings' lone doubles point with an 8-4 triumph at the top flight.

Tarantino (6-0, 6-0) and Sweeney (6-1, 6-1) cruised to straight set victories at the sixth and second flights, respectively, to give the Bears a 4-1 lead. Rosa than secured the fifth and deciding point with a 6-4, 6-1 straight set win at number four.

Startseva, the reigning Little East Player of the Year, won the matchup of the top flight singles players against BSU freshman Sailor Nordstrom (New Bedford, Mass.). Startseva won the first set in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-4), and then posted a 6-1 decision in the second set.

Gray earned a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) triumph at number five, while senior Emma Mills (Westport, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for the Bears' with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-4 decision at the third flight.

The Bears host non-conference foe Eastern Nazarene College on Thursday afternoon at 3:30, while the Vikings travel to LEC rival Western Connecticut State University on Saturday for a one o'clock match with the Colonials.
