Women's Tennis Places 6th at Newport Grass Court Doubles Tournament

NEWPORT, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team placed sixth at the 34th Annual Newport Grass Court Doubles Tournament held at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

In flight A, freshman Sailor Nordstrom (New Bedford, Mass.) and senior Emma Mills (Westport, Mass.) went 1-2 on the day with a consolation round 8-7 (7-1) victory over teammates Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) and Angelique Gray (Barnstable, Mass.).

Junior Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) represented the Bears in Flight B and posted a 2-1 recorded with a pair of 8-4 consolation round wins over Missy Caiola and Liz Gibbons of Holy Cross, and Carolyn Callahan and Marie Emerson of the University of Saint Joseph.

In Flight C, juniors Jessica Gaudreau (Hanson, Mass.) and Michaela Loring (New Marlborough, Mass.) earned an 8-1 first round victory over Elke Moser Melis and Sarah Maglio of the University of Saint Joseph. Gaudreau and Loring then dropped an 8-0 decision to the Holy Cross tandem of Eleanor Fulghum and Lanie Olsen in the semifinals.

Nicholas College won the tournament title with 18 team points. Holy Cross finished second with eight points, while Colby-Sawyer College placed third with seven. Salve Regina (6 pts.), Mount Holyoke (6 pts.), Bridgewater State (5 pts.) and St. Joseph (1 pt.) rounded out the remaining teams.

The Bears return to the court on Saturday at noon when they entertain Little East Conference (LEC) rival Rhode Island College.
