Women's Tennis Blanks Little East Foe Castleton, 7-0, in Rain-Shortened Match

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team posted a 7-0 victory over Little East Conference foe Castleton University in a rain-shortened match on Saturday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Little East, while the Spartans fall to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Bridgewater State swept the three doubles matches as freshman Sailor Nordstrom (New Bedford, Mass. and senior Emma Mills (Westport, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-0 win at the first flight, while junior Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) cruised to an 8-0 triumph at the second spot. BSU grad student Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) and junior Jessica Gaudreau (Hanson, Mass.) completed the sweep with an 8-3 decision at number three. For Gaudreau, the win marked the first of her collegiate career.

In singles play, Sweeney, Mills and Tarantino all won in straight sets at the second (6-0, 6-0), third (6-1, 6-0) and fifth (6-2, 6-0) flights, respectively. Rosa cruised to a 6-0 win in the first set at number four singles before her opponent retired due to injury.

The first and sixth singles flights were both in the second set when the rains came and put a halt to the match. Nordstrom was leading 6-4, 4-1 at the top flight, while Castleton senior Alexis Curley (Greenwich, N.Y.) led 6-4, 2-1 at number six.

The Bears travel to Roger Williams University on Thursday for a four o'clock match with the Hawks. The Spartans entertain Sage College on Wednesday also at four.
