Women's Tennis Drops Tough 6-3 Decision to Endicott

BEVERLY, Mass. -- The visiting Bridgewater State University women's tennis team opened the 2019 season with a tough 6-3 setback to Endicott College on Monday afternoon at the South Campus Courts.

The host Gulls captured two of the three double matches and four of the six singles flights.

Junior Gretta Hartman (Glastonbury, Conn.) and freshman Ashley Keaveney (Exeter, N.H.) teamed up for an 8-0 victory at first double, while the duo of junior Cameron Foley, (Lynnfield, Mass.) and sophomore Cara McCormack (Worcester, Mass.) notched an 8-1 victory at number three.

BSU grad student Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) and senior Angelique Gray (Barnstable, Mass.) posted an 8-6 decision at the second flight for the Bears' lone doubles point.

Tarantino earned a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) straight set triumph at number six singles to even the match at 2-2.

Foley reclaimed the lead for the Gulls with a 6-3, 6-4 straight set win at the third flight. McCormack cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the second spot, and Jennifer Stone (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) earned the decisive fifth point for the hosts with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-1) decision at number five.

Endicott freshman Olivia Berler (Marstons Mills, Mass.) and BSU rookie Sailor Nordstrom (New Bedford, Mass.) split the first two sets, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, in the battle of the top-flight singles players before Berler came away with a tough 12-10 decision in the tie-breaker.

BSU sophomore Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) battled back from a set down to post a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win at number four to account for the final score of 6-3.

In upcoming action, the Gulls (2-0) travel to Merrimack College on Tuesday afternoon for a three o'clock match with the Warriors. The Bears (0-1) open Little East Conference play on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Plymouth State University to take on the Panthers at one.
