Women's Tennis Falls to UMass Dartmouth in Little East Tournament

DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Fourth-seeded UMass Dartmouth posted a 5-1 victory over fifth-seeded Bridgewater State University in the quarterfinal round of the 2018 Little East Conference (LEC) Women's Tennis Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at the UMD Tennis Courts.

The host Corsairs, who improve to 11-4 with their seventh straight triumph, advance to Friday's semifinal round and will take on top-seeded and undefeated Rhode Island College (15-0) at the RIC Tennis Center in Providence, Rhode Island beginning at 2:00 pm. The visiting Bears finish their season with an overall mark of 7-9.

UMass was led by senior Jenna Lahaie (Lakeville, Mass.) who picked up wins in both singles and doubles play. Lahaie and junior Jaime Fastino (Rehoboth, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-3 win at number one doubles for UMass Dartmouth, which received an 8-6 victory at the number two doubles position from the junior tandem of Monika Reining (Linsengericht, Germany) and Natasha Shiku (North Grafton, Mass.).

Bridgewater State collected its lone point of the contest with an 8-2 triumph from the number three doubles duo of freshman Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.).

Lahaie began a singles sweep for the Corsairs by dropping only three games in a straight-set win at the number one spot in the lineup, while sophomore Michelle Aftandilian (Watertown, Mass.) added a 6-2, 6-3 victory at number three singles.  Sophomore Emma Sokolovsky (Canton, Mass.) secured the final point of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at number six singles to close out the match for the hosts. The remaining three singles matches were unfinished.
