Women's Tennis Downs Western Connecticut, 6-3

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team posted a 6-3 victory over visiting Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference (LEC) match on Saturday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The host Bears improve to 3-4 on the season and 2-1 in the Little East, while the Colonials fall to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Bridgewater captured two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles flights.

In doubles play, junior Emma Mills (Westport, Mass.) teamed with sophomore Madison Butkus (Attleboro, Mass.) for an 8-2 win at the second flight for the Bears, while sophomore Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) and freshman Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) cruised to an 8-0 triumph at number three.

Junior Emma Chapman (Danbury, Conn.) and senior Carole Allers (Wilton, Conn.) picked up the Colonials' lone doubles point with an 8-2 decision at the top flight.

Rosa breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 straight set win at fifth singles. The Bears also received straight set singles victories from senior Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) at number three (6-2, 6-2), junior Angelique Gray (Osterville, Mass.) at the fourth flight (6-1, 6-1) and senior Emily McGrath (North Dartmouth, Mass.) at the sixth spot (6-0, 6-3). Gray's win gave Bridgewater the decisive fifth point to clinch the match.

Allers won in straight sets for Western Connecticut at the second flight, 6-3, 6-2, while Chapman outlasted Mills in the battle of the top singles players, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 10-5.

The Bears travel to Clark University on Monday afternoon for a four o'clock non-conference match with the Cougars. The Colonials host FDU-Florham on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30.
