BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team downed visiting Emerson College, 5-4, on Friday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 8-4 on the season, while the Lions fall to 0-2.

Bridgewater captured two of three doubles matches and three of the six singles flights to come away with the dramatic win.

The Bears received doubles wins from the senior tandem of Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) and Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) at the second flight (8-6), and sophomore Angelique Gray (Osterville, Mass.) and junior Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) at number three (8-1).

The top pairing of sophomores Alisha Parikh (Los Altos, Calif.) and Alex Weingarten (San Diego, Calif.) posted an 8-5 victory for the Lions' lone doubles point.

Straight set singles wins by Roman at the second flight (6-2, 6-3) and freshman Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) at number six (6-2, 6-1) staked Bridgewater State to a 4-1 lead.

Emerson, however, rallied with singles victories from sophomores Jolin Cheng (Woodstock, Vt.) and Sabrina Jacobs (Demarest, N.J.), and freshman Meredith Stisser (Manchester, N.H.) at the fifth (6-1, 6-4), first (2-6, 6-1, 6-2) and fourth (3-6, 6-3, 10-7) flights, respectively, to knot the score at 4-4.

Scagnelli then rallied from a set down to clinch the match for the Bears with a 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-5), 5-2 triumph at number three.

The Bears hit the road to take on Worcester State University in a Little East Conference match on Saturday at noon. The Lions are off until next Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Salem State University for a 3:30 match with the Vikings.
