Women's Tennis Tops Clark, 8-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team earned an 8-1 victory over non-conference foe Clark University on Thursday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The host Bears improve to 5-4 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 1-4.

Bridgewater swept all three doubles flights and captured five of the six singles matches.

In doubles play, seniors Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) and Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) recorded an 8-3 decision at the second flight, while sophomore Angelique Gray (Osterville, Mass.) and junior Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-2 win at number three. Seniors Alisha Silva (Taunton, Mass.) and Amanda Strickland (Plymouth, Mass.) capped off doubles competition with an 8-5 triumph at the top spot.

Silva won the battle of the top flight singles players as she won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Roman (6-1, 6-0) and Scagnelli (6-2, 6-2) also won in straight sets for the Bears at the second and third flights, respectively. Freshman Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) added a 6-1, 6-1 straight set victory at number six, while Strickland battled back from a set down to post a 5-7, 6-0, 11-9 win at the fourth flight.

Freshman Elizabeth Garfield (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) picked up the Cougars' lone point with a 6-1, 6-1 straight set triumph at fourth singles.

In upcoming action, the Bears host Little East Conference rival Salem State University on Saturday at noon. The Cougars are off until next Tuesday when they travel to the College of the Holy Cross for a four o'clock match with the Crusaders.
