Women's Tennis Drops 9-0 Decision to Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University women's tennis team cruided to a 9-0 victory over visiting Bridgewater State University in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at the RWU Tennis Courts.

The host Hawks improve to 6-2 on the season, while the Bears fall to 3-3.

Roger Williams captured all three doubles matches and swept the six singles flights.

Kathryn Hughes (Westford, Mass.) and Julia Akerman (Greenwich, Conn.) teamed up for an 8-1 win at first doubles, while Gabrielle Riley (Barnstable, Mass.) combined with Heidi Martin (Scituate, Mass.) for an 8-4 decision at the second flight. The Hawks' third flight pairing of Ali Stankiewicz (Brunswick, Maine) and Allie Grinavic (North Attleboro, Mass.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory.

Singles play produced the match of the day as Hughes outlasted BSU senior Alisha Silva (Taunton, Mass.) at the top flight. After splitting the first two sets (6-4, 0-6), Hughes took the match with a 16-14 super tie-breaker decision in the deciding set.

The other five singles flights were decided in straight sets with Akerman, Stankiewicz, Taryn Roche (Greenlawn, N.Y.), Grinavic and Riley winning at the second through sixth flights, respectively. Riley battled BSU freshman Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) to a hard-fought 6-5, 6-3 triumph at number six.

In upcoming action, the Hawks entertain Commonwealth Coast Conference rival Endicott College on Saturday, while the Bears travel to Little East Conference foe Plymouth State University also on Saturday. Both matches are slated to get underway at 1:00 PM.
