Women's Soccer Downs Gordon in Double Overtime, 1-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior forward Alana Vincent (Taunton, Mass.) netted the OT winner to lift the Bridgewater State University women's soccer team to a 1-0 double overtime victory over visiting Gordon College on Wednesday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Bears improve to 8-6 on the season with their third straight win, while the visiting Fighting Scots fall to 9-3-3. The two teams had never met prior to today's contest.

Vincent's game-winner came with 7:14 remaining in the second overtime session. Senior forward Emma Sanders (Seekonk, Mass.) set up the goal as she beat two defenders and then split the defense with a pass to Vincent inside the 18. Vincent dribbled to the right of the net and tucked a shot inside the right post and just under the crossbar from seven yards out.

The goal marked Vincent's team-leading 11th of the season and fifth game-winner. For Sanders, the assist was her team-best sixth of the 2019 campaign.

Bridgewater State finished with a 27-18 shot advantage for the game as well as a 5-3 edge in corner kick attempts. The Bears outshot the Fighting Scots 17-8 after the first half.

BSU senior netminder Kellie Souza (Wilmington, Mass.) made six saves to record her eighth win of the season and sixth shutout.

Both teams had their share of scoring opportunities throughout the contest.

Senior goalkeeper Giselle Maso (Frisco, Texas) made a leaping stop on a shot by BSU freshman midfielder Kelly Powers (Stoneham, Mass.) in the fifth minute of play.

Gordon senior forward  Lexi Potter (South Glen Falls, N.Y.) was unable to convert off a through-ball in the ninth minute as her shot went wide of the far post. In the 14th minute, Souza made an outstanding diving stop on a header attempt labeled for the right side of the net by junior defender Monet Marshall (Redmond, Wash.).

Vincent rang one of the post in the 16th minute and then was stymied by a sprawling Maso midway through the second half. In the opening minute of the first overtime period, Vincent fired a shot from just outside the 18 that sailed wide of the far post.

Moments before the game-winner, Gordon senior midfielder Devin Lacroix (Candia, N.H.) fired a shot from 30 yards out that just went over the crossbar. The Bears would then convert off the ensuing goal kick.

Maso finished with eight saves in the setback for the Fighting Scots.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday. The Bears travel to Framingham State University for an 11 o'clock MASCAC game with the Rams, while the Fighting Scots entertain CCC rival Curry College at one.

Notes: Sanders moved into a tie for third place among the Bears' all-time assist leaders. She equaled Mackenzie Hatfield who notched 20 assists from 2012 to 2014....Sanders also moved into sole possession of tenth place on the Bears' all-time scoring list with her 52nd career point.
