NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College women's soccer team scored five times in the second half as the host Lyons cruised to a 7-0 victory over visiting Bridgewater State University on Wednesday afternoon at Mirrione Stadium.
The Lyons improve to 2-1-2 on the season, while the visiting Bears fall to 0-3.
Sophomore midfielder Chloe Troy (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman forward Sadie Recht (Los Angeles, Calif.) potted first half goals to give Wheaton a 2-0 lead at the break. Troy scored on a header goal off a corner kick sent into the box by junior defender Kyla Magalhaes (Naugatuck, Conn.) in the 25th minute. Recht found the back of the net just 2 1/2 minutes later off an assist from senior defender Aymara O'Brien-Pappalardo (Easton, Conn.).
Senior defender Jenna Palmer (Cranston, R.I.) made it a 3-0 game just 59 seconds into the second half with Troy picking up the assist. Junior midfielder Lauryn Parent (Belchertown, Mass.) and Troy scored just 99 second apart midway through the stanza to extend the lead to 5-0 and put the game out of reach.
The Lyons also received goals from freshman forward Trinity Cloud (Seekonk, Mass.) in the 80th minute and junior midfielder Katharine Chura (Metuchen, N.J.) in the 81st minute to round out the scoring.
Wheaton held a 22-7 shot advantage as well as a 10-2 edge in corner kick attempts.
Senior Alexa Barbagallo (Bridgewater, N.J.) picked up her second win of the season between the pipes for the Lyons as she made two saves in 75 1/2 minutes of action. Freshman Jamie Rushnak (Harwich, Mass.) played the final 14:30 and turned aside one shot.
Senior goalkeeper Kellie Souza (Wilmington, Mass.) made three stops in the setback for Bridgewater State. Senior forward Alana Vincent (Taunton, Mass.) paced the Bears with four shots including two on frame.
In upcoming action, the Bears host Emmanuel College on Saturday at noon. The Lyons are off until next Wednesday afternoon when they entertain Endicott College at four.
