Women's Soccer Battles MCLA to 1-1 Draw

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University and MCLA battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's soccer game on Saturday afternoon in Bridgewater.

The host Bears end the regular season with a 6-9-1 record including a 4-2-1 mark in the MASCAC.  MCLA wraps up regular season play at 10-2-5 overall and 4-0-3 in the conference.

The Bears are seeded fourth in next week's MASCAC Tournament while the Trailblazers are the top seed.  The two teams will meet again next Wednesday at 1:00 PM in the semifinals out in North Adams.

MCLA had a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the 25th minute as they were awarded a penalty kick.  However, freshman midfielder Ashlee Scofield (Averill Park, N.Y.) pushed the attempt wide left to keep the game scoreless.

The Bears were able to take advantage just two minutes later as junior midfielder Carrie Robitaille (Ludlow, MA) knocked home a rebound of an Amber LaPorte (New Hartford, Conn.) shot.

MCLA tied the score at 1-1 in the 49th minute when Trailblazer sophomore midfielder Brianna Bresett (Adams, MA) was able to knock in a rebound of a Jess Tietgens (Stamford, Vt.) shot that deflected off a defender.

The Trailblazers had the best opportunity to come up with the golden goal in the first overtime as Bresett hit the crossbar in the 92nd minute and Tietgens knocked the rebound wide.

Senior goaltender Kayla Grover (Haverhill, Mass.) made 12 saves for the Bears who were outshot in the game, 21-18.  Junior Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, N.Y.) turned aside nine shots between the pipes for MCLA.

Prior to the game, Bridgewater honored seniors Christina Amaral (Ludlow, Mass.), Kylie Beaton (Epsom, N.H.), Grover, Aly Johnson (Stamford, Conn.), Maura Kotowski (Saugus, Mass.) and Amanda Vigneault (Ludlow, Mass.) who were playing in their final home game.
